Rarely can the life of a saint fill as many pages as that of St Joseph Calasanz. This is because it was exceptionally long, as he lived to the age of 91; because of the variety of situations in which he lived and the people he encountered; because of the seriousness of the problems he had to deal with; and because of the wealth of writings he produced.
It should be added that of the more than 80 biographies dedicated to him over the course of three and a half centuries, only a few fulfil the critical-documentary requirements of the time in which they were written, while the others remain in the line of hagiographic narrative. In the last half century, however, many monographic studies have been carried out on the figure of the Founder of the Pious Schools and numerous archival sources have been published, which are essential for a serious revision of his biography. This required a work of synthesis, purification and critical evaluation of all that had been researched.
The work of Fr Severino Giner, Sch. P. joins this line of research as one of the most comprehensive biographies of the life of the Saint. There are several reasons for this, such as: Firstly, it is one of the most recent biographies with a sophisticated documentation. Secondly, because Fr Giner has read all known archival documents and relevant publications, subjected them to serious criticism and applied a rigorous comparative method… Thirdly, because the new critical biography provides sources in every case, attempts to resolve the apparent contradictions and explains the concrete conflict situations clearly. This work consecrates definitively Fr. Severino Giner, Sch. P. as one of the greatest biographers of St. Joseph of Calasanz.
It is neither fervent glorification nor pious credulity, but the serene and critical truth that conveys the authentic greatness of the saint. Ediciones Calasancias is proud to present this magnificent work by Father Severino Giner, Sch. P.
