Pietro Casani of the Nativity of the Virgin was born in the city of Lucca, Italy, on September 8, 1572. He was Saint Joseph Calasanz’s right-hand man in the founding of the Order, the trainer of the first generations of Piarist religious—among whom was the Venerable Glicerio Landriani—and the organizer and superior of many Piarist houses and provinces in northern and southern Italy and in areas of Central Europe plagued by the Protestant heresy.
With his fervent preaching and the example of his dedicated and selfless life, he attracted many young people to join the Order of the Pious Schools and formed them as true Poor of the Mother of God at the service of Christ in the little ones.
He died in Rome at the age of 75, on October 17, 1647, and was declared Blessed by John Paul II on October 1, 1995.
